Outreach & Missions
We have been blessed with a number of outreach and mission opportunities.
Haiti
A work team of 18 people, spent almost 2 weeks in Haiti. They arrived in Port-au-Prince just minutes before the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck 10 miles to the west of the city. A summary of their trip can be found here.
CornerStone was also able to send medical supplies to this work team in Haiti within days of the earthquake.
CornerStone organized and sponsored a benefit auction for 3 missions that work in Haiti. This public auction was held on May 1st, 2010. Approximately $34,000 was raised in support of
International Faith Missions, Heart of Compassion, and International Haven Fellowship.
Christian Aid Ministries
Each month on the second Thursday, we head to Brookville to sort donated clothing for the Brethren
Charity Fund. The clothing starts out in a big pile, then they are checked for defects and
bagged. Each bag weighes in excess of 100 pounds and contains clothes for men, women,
and children. The bags are then compressed to save space in the shipping container. Containers
are then shipped around the world to needy families.
Christian Disaster Service
Christian Disaster Service is an organization which travels to areas that were hit hard by natural
disasters. The week of February 4th, fourteen men, women, and children headed down to Waveland,
Mississippi, where the eye of Hurricane Katrina hit hardest, to help with the rebuilding efforts.
The ride was long, the fog was thick and the work was hard but it was all worth the effort.
There were three main projects that we worked on during the week. On Monday we split into two
groups, the smaller group went to set polls (the shoreline equivalent of a foundation) for the
next project. The rest of us went to a house just a couple hundred yards from the beach to hang
drywall, siding and work on odd and ends. Tuesday a couple of guys headed out to work on an
addition for a couple that had their home destroyed by the hurricane and had moved inland a few
miles. They worked on finishing some electrical work, odd and end framing, insulating and hanging
drywall. The most common phrase of the week here "I dunno, I cut it three times and it's still
too short." Among all this work, several of us had time to get sick, but with the love and care
of God this didn't slow us down.
